Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

At Sand Scapes, we understand that our specialized equipment and services may be new to some of our clients. Below are answers to some of the most common questions we receive about our sand sifting, aeration, and cleaning processes.

01

What is a sand sifting machine and how does it work?

Sand Scapes owns and operates remote-controlled, self-propelled sand sifting machines. The machine’s cutting edge penetrates deep into the surface, lifting material onto a vibrating screener. The screener separates unwanted debris from the sand or soil, allowing the clean material to fall back to the surface while the debris is collected in a rear hopper for disposal.

02

Why is sifting better than raking?

Sifting provides a deeper and more thorough cleaning than raking. Our machines use various screen sizes to capture even the smallest debris—such as animal waste, small stones, and glass fragments. Traditional raking only combs the surface, leaving smaller and buried materials behind.

03

What can the sand sifting machine remove?

Our machines are capable of removing a wide range of unwanted materials, including:

  • Broken glass and metal fragments
  • Cigarette butts, nails, and small stones
  • Animal feces and organic debris
  • Shells and other surface contaminants
  • General litter

04

How often should sand or soil be cleaned?

The recommended cleaning frequency depends on the level of use and amount of debris accumulation. High-traffic areas may benefit from more frequent cleanings, while others can be maintained seasonally. Regular service helps prevent buildup and keeps the area cleaner over time.

05

Can you clean wet sand or soil?

Yes, but for optimal results, the material should be as dry as possible. Wet sand can reduce the efficiency of the sifting process. When necessary, we adjust by using larger screens and slower operating speeds to accommodate moisture conditions.

06

Will the machine remove everything?

While no process can remove every single particle, our equipment delivers a significantly deeper and more effective cleaning than manual raking or surface methods. We make every effort to leave each site as clean and contaminant-free as possible.

07

How much does sand cleaning cost?

Pricing varies based on the size of the area, the condition of the sand, and the type of service required. We provide free estimates after assessing your site and determining the best approach for cleaning, aeration, or replenishment. Contact us to schedule an evaluation and receive a customized quote.

08

What will my putting greens look like after aeration with the PlanetAir?

Following aeration with the PlanetAir system, the putting surface will display a uniform, high-density pattern of approximately 1-inch linear incisions. These shallow, surgical-style slits promote subsurface oxygen exchange and relieve compaction without disrupting playability.

09

How frequently should I use the PlanetAir on my greens?

The PlanetAir should be operated on a regular schedule throughout the active growing season. Optimal results are achieved by overlapping subsequent applications while the benefits of the previous pass remain active.

10

Will aeration affect ball roll or playability?

Minor disruption may occur immediately after traditional core aeration, typically resolved within 7–10 days with proper topdressing. With PlanetAir or micro-aeration equipment, there is no negative impact on ball roll—in fact, frequent light aeration can increase ball speed and improve overall surface firmness.
